Garden Journal: August 3, 2008

I decided to begin keeping my garden journal on my blog. It’s just easier and quicker to type it up than search for a pen/cil in my house.
Dear Garden,
The most important thing we did today, for our garden, was putting the pumpkins in the ground. After making the mistake of putting our watermelon plants in cramped quarters (ok, it didn’t look that cramped when they were young), we planted only 9 pumpkin vines in a very large area of our backyard and saved two for a front yard fall decoration.
Here they are before planting:

All the ones that sprouted look so healthy! They had been moved indoors the night before because of a great summer storm that popped up. The weather predicted nickel size hail – but, we didn’t get any.

There’s Dave. He laid out a soaker hose for the pumpkins because we read that this was the best way to water them. We decided to use plastic under the plants. We made the mistake of not using anything to keep the grass down around the watermelons and no matter what you do, that place looks like a jungle. Donkey swears he will never, ever do that again.

These cucumbers came out of the jungle of cucumber, grass and watermelon. It’s very difficult to get in there and find anything and apparently these guys were hid well enough to become some of the fattest cucumbers I’ve ever seen. I thought maybe since they are right near the watermelon that they might be cumbermelons.

This is what we got today. The green beans are pumping out like crazy.. there’s probably enough still on the plant that we will have two more dinners worth of green beans this week. The big tomato plants are also producing a lot. I even got to freeze some for winter use. On a sad note, these are the last of our squash as the squash plant has died of heat stroke and the cherry tomato plants are following the same route.

The bell pepper plants are doing quite well. They’re producing a lot of peppers. I got to freeze some of them, too.

It’s been really hot, 90-95 most days. The good thing is we seem to be getting more rain than last year. The bad thing is it’s HHAAWWT! It doesn’t seem to bother the boys who seem to be working on making their tan lines disappear, before school starts, by turning our kiddie pool into a nude beach. No, I won’t post pics of that – but, yeah, I definitely took some LOL. I remember when I was about 5 and totally didn’t get the difference between boys and girls. My mom baby sat several boys – but, I was the lone girl. I demanded that my swim suit look like theirs. LOL She took pics of that, too. *blush*
